How it works
Most Prakrit is taught through dense grammars and old commentaries, with no one to check your answers. Prakrit Sarita breaks it into short lessons, says every word aloud and tells you straight away when you get something right.
Start with the Prakrit alphabet in Devanagari and hear how every letter is said.
Short lessons add one verb ending or one case at a time, with a question after every step.
Use what you learned on picture stories, the Namokar Mantra and simple Agama passages.

About the language
Prakrit (प्राकृत) is a family of Middle Indo-Aryan languages that grew alongside Sanskrit and was spoken across ancient India. Its name means “natural” or “everyday” speech.
The Jain Agamas, the inscriptions of Emperor Ashoka and the dialogue of many Sanskrit plays are written in Prakrit, in dialects such as Ardhamagadhi, Shauraseni and Maharashtri. Learning it opens a living part of India's literature that Sanskrit alone does not reach.
More about Prakrit SaritaPrakrit and Sanskrit share most of their words and grammar. Prakrit usually simplifies the Sanskrit sounds: joined consonants become doubled ones and some sounds between vowels drop away. Anyone who knows Sanskrit or Hindi will recognise these words at once.

Prakrit (प्राकृत) is a family of Middle Indo-Aryan languages that grew alongside Sanskrit and was spoken across ancient India. The Jain Agamas, the inscriptions of Emperor Ashoka and the dialogue of many Sanskrit plays are in Prakrit. Prakrit Sarita teaches it in Devanagari, with Hindi meanings.
Prakrit and Sanskrit share most of their words and grammar. Prakrit words are often simpler forms of Sanskrit ones: धर्म becomes धम्म, हस्त becomes हत्थ and हसति becomes हसइ. If you know Sanskrit or Hindi, many Prakrit words feel familiar, and Prakrit opens the Jain texts and the Prakrit parts of Sanskrit drama.
Yes. The alphabet, present-tense lessons, three games, three sentence challenges, two picture stories, the 24 Tirthankaras page and the dictionary are free forever. Membership opens every other lesson, topic, game, story and passage.
Each lesson is a run of short screens: a word or a rule, then a question you answer straight away by matching pairs, choosing a meaning, putting words in order or identifying a form. Words are read aloud, every answer is checked at once, and you earn XP and keep a streak as you go.
You need Hindi, but no Sanskrit. Lessons and grammar are explained in Hindi, and the menus, lesson titles and full story translations are also in English. Prakrit is always written in Devanagari, which the alphabet topic teaches first.
Children, students and adults who want to read and understand Prakrit step by step, from Jain learners reading the Agamas to students of Sanskrit and other Indian languages.
